Root adaptations of black spruce growing in water-saturated soil

چکیده
Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) is the main tree species growing within peatlands. The difficult conditions peatlands are associated with low individual wood productivity, and only tolerant to high ground water level can survive. We examine effect of water-saturated soil on growth potential black trees specific adaptation root system. Experimental mesocosms were constructed two drainage regimes (saturated well-drained conditions). measured biomass, height, diameter at stem base 55 saplings noted location each horizontal root. exhibited a very shallow system located above saturated commercial peat 19 years after experiment was initiated. Most roots adventitious in mesocosms. Overall aerial biomass accumulation under significantly lower than that Interestingly, root–shoot ratios similar across regimes. Soil induced trees, physiological stress affected entire productivity all components (stem, branches, system). However, distribution remained

Mechanisms of Soil Carbon Stabilization in Black Spruce Forests of Interior Alaska: Soil Temperature, Soil Water, and Wildfire
and Overview: The likely direction of change in soil organic carbon (SOC) in the boreal forest biome, which harbors roughly 22% of the global soil carbon pool, is of marked concern because climate warming is projected to be greatest in high latitudes and temperature is the cardinal determinant of soil C mineralization. Moreover, the majority of boreal forest SOC is harbored in surficial organic...
متن کاملFine and coarse root parameters from mature black spruce displaying genetic soil moisture interaction in growth
Fine and coarse root biomass, C, and N mass parameters were assessed by root size and soil depths from soil cores in plots of 32-year-old black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb.) from four full-sib families studied previously for drought tolerance and differential productivity on a dry and wet site. All fine and coarse root size categories had greater root biomass on the ...
متن کاملSoil and root respiration in mature Alaskan black spruce forests that vary in soil organic matter decomposition rates
Climate warming at high latitudes is expected to increase root and microbial respiration and thus cause an increase in soil respiration. We measured the root and microbial components of soil respiration near Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2000 and 2001, in three black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.) forests. We hypothesized faster decomposition correlates with greater amounts of both root and micro...
متن کاملXylogenesis in black spruce: does soil temperature matter?
In boreal ecosystems, an increase in soil temperature can stimulate plant growth. However, cambium phenology in trees was better explained by air than soil temperature, which suggested that soil temperature is not the main limiting factor affecting xylogenesis. Since soil temperature and snowmelt are correlated to air temperature, the question whether soil temperature directly limits xylogenesi...
متن کاملModeling water uptake by a root system growing in a fixed soil volume
The water uptake by roots of plants is examined for an ideal situation, with an approximation that resembles plants growing in pots, meaning that the total soil volume is fixed. We propose a coupled water uptake-root growth model. A one-dimensional model for water flux and water uptake by a root system growing uniformly distributed in the soil is presented, and the Van Genuchten model for the t...
